The SAAFoST Foundation Undergraduate Bursary is aimed at students already enrolled in full time undergraduate food science and technology study at a South African tertiary institution. It is intended for a first degree or diploma and is awarded on academic merit, employment equity and demonstrated potential. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents who have lived in South Africa for at least three years before applying. The programme also requires applicants to have been SAAFoST members for at least twelve months before the application.

The bursary contributes to actual tuition fees shown on the student account, up to R60 000 per year until graduation. Payments are made directly to the tertiary institution in two instalments, with continuation subject to academic performance. A bursary may be converted into a repayable loan if the student interrupts studies, changes courses without formal permission, fails a year or does not complete the course within the permitted period. Applicants should read the conditions and understand the role of SAAFoST membership before applying.

The current official page lists 29 January 2027 as the application closing date. The application checklist includes a passport size photograph, certified identity document, latest academic results, personal statement, a reference from someone at the tertiary institution who has known the applicant in a learning capacity, and proof of registration for 2027.
