The SAAFoST Foundation Matriculant Bursary is intended for learners who are completing Grade 12 and plan to begin a full time degree or diploma in food science and technology at a South African tertiary institution. Selection considers academic achievement, demonstrated potential and employment equity. Applicants should have the required school leaving certificate or recognised equivalent and an achievement rating of at least five in Mathematics and Physical Science. Life Science is recommended. Applicants must be South African citizens who have lived in South Africa for at least three years before applying.

The bursary contributes to actual tuition fees charged by the institution, up to R60 000 per year. Payment is made directly to the institution in instalments and continued payment depends on satisfactory academic results. The foundation can convert the bursary into a repayable loan if a recipient stops or interrupts the approved studies, changes courses without permission, fails a year or does not complete the qualification within the permitted period. Applicants should read the current conditions before accepting an award.

The application requires a passport size photograph, certified identity document, recent school results, a personal statement and a reference from someone who has known the applicant in a learning capacity. The closing date published by the foundation is 30 October 2026. Applicants should confirm their registration arrangements and submit the completed application to the foundation using the instructions on its official page.
