The Astron Energy Bursary Programme offers full cost study support to eligible South African citizens who intend to study full time in 2027. The programme covers tuition, textbooks, accommodation, food and monthly allowances. It also offers academic support, mentorship, psychosocial support and a work readiness programme. Applicants must be under 35, be pursuing the relevant qualification level for the first time and have achieved an average of at least 70 percent in the most recent full academic year. The qualification must be offered by a tertiary institution registered with the relevant South African authorities.

The listed study areas include mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, accounting, finance, commerce, internal audit, risk management, marketing, financial information systems and data analytics. Engineering applicants must check the programme rule that the engineering qualification must be a BSc or BEng rather than a BTech qualification. Applicants who receive an award must study full time and comply with the conditions in the bursary agreement. The scheme includes a work back obligation for each year of support, and failure to meet the terms may lead to repayment obligations.

The application portal states that applications close on Monday, 26 October 2026 at 12 midday. The required documents differ according to whether the applicant is in matric, currently enrolled at a tertiary institution, taking a gap year or applying for postgraduate study. Applicants should use the current checklist on the portal and ensure that certified documents meet the stated age requirements before submitting.
